UUUFA

Unitarian Universalists United for Faith in Action first met at Allegheny UU Church in February 2005. Seventeen people, representing all five Pittsburgh area UU churches, attended.

The impetus for starting this group came from a general frustration with the results of the 2004 election and the burgeoning influence of the religious right. Some of us felt a need to make our progressive, liberal spiritual values more visible to the public.

There was much lively discussion at the first meeting as we attempted to articulate our values and determine what the goals of the group should be. There was a general consensus that the seven UU principles are the only clear values that the group holds in common. Even then, many were reluctant to speak on behalf of their congregation as a whole. Thus the UUUFA speaks only for the group.

The goals established are as follows:

To have cooperation among members of greater Pittsburgh UU congregations to:

  1. Promote the visibility of UU values and Unitarian Universalism in public conversation.
  2. Broaden the public conversation to include UU/liberal values.
  3. Be a public voice of liberal values on behalf of social justice issues.

We attempt to meet these goals by taking part in social justice activities as a group and writing letters to the editor, signed by group members. We have designed royal blue t-shirts with a chalice logo and the words “Unitarian Universalists In and Around Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania” to increase our visibility. We wear these shirts to public events to identify ourselves as UUs.

We try to have at least one representative from each of the five Pittsburgh area churches at our monthly meetings. These representatives spread the word of our activities at their individual churches. We also communicate with people from Ginger Hill, Smithton, and Ligonier UU churches through our email list. We encourage any and all interested UUs to participate in monthly planning meetings and especially in our public events.

In our first year, we marched as a group in the Gay Pride Parade, participated in an anti-war rally, participated in a fast and rally to protest the genocide in Darfur, sponsored a screening of a Wal Mart documentary, co-sponsored a talk by Michael Lerner (national chair of the TIKKUN Community, an interfaith social justice community), and held a picnic for all area UUs. We also had two letters to the editor published in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette - one on gay pride and one on verified voting legislation.

Our meeting time and place are varied to accommodate as many people as possible. If you would like to attend our monthly meeting, please contact Carolyn Ferguson, chairperson, at cferg2(at)earthlink.net for the time and place.
