An Appreciative Approach to

Reframing Conflict

Rev. Mary Grigolia

October 30, 2011

Many thanks to all for the successful "Reframing Conflict" workshop. A very special thanks to Rev. Mary Grigolia for her wisdom and creativity in creating a conflict workshop that works! We've put the presentation and printed resources here. You should be able to access at the following URLs:

Rev. Mary led us through a process for discovering what any given conflict calls attention to. When presented with the gift of a conflict, the old questions were along the lines of “What or who is the problem and how is it fixed?” The creative, transformative questions that Mary suggests are “What do I need?” and, perhaps more importantly for us as leaders, “What does the church need?” In other words, “What is this conflict calling us to become?”

Rather than gravitating toward win-lose or lose-lose strategies of blame and avoidance, this kind of deep learning provides a way to find common ground for the kinds of win-win solutions that create what Martin Luther King calls the “Beloved Community.”
