Allegheny Unitarian Universalist Church Logo

Since 1906, Allegheny Unitarian Universalist Church has been a beacon not just of community, truth, and spiritual growth, but of social advocacy and action.

So what do we do at Allegheny that's so special? We provide a welcoming home for people from many religious backgrounds and perspectives. We provide a non-judgmental reception to people of diverse sexual orientations. As an urban church, we work in partnership with the North Side community of which we are a part, and with those whose circumstances require a helping hand.

As a congregation and as individuals, we have historically involved ourselves in issues of the times - issues like women's suffrage, civil rights, urban renewal, anti-war protests, and nuclear disarmament. Today we're working on a broad range of social issues including economic justice, racial diversity, gay rights, community revitalization, homelessness and hunger, and environmental issues.

As the 2nd oldest Unitarian Church in Pittsburgh, we've been around awhile, but you won't find us stuck in the past. We are growing in numbers and voice, experiencing a rebirth of commitment and a new relevance to our work. We invite you to come learn more about our community.

Services for June 2002
Sunday June 2 11:00 am - Rev. Art McDonald
Membership: A Shared Ministry in the Community

Today is the day that we acknowledge publicly those who have joined AUUC in the past 6 months. It is a great moment when new folks bring their talents, gifts and energy to the congregation. It is also the day for the annual AIDS Walk in Pittsburgh; an event that many from AUUC participated in. Some of our youth and adults will be marching. Art will reflect upon the joy of membership, its demands and our shared ministry in the community.

Sunday June 9 11:00 am - Robert Silber & John Meikle
Caring for Our Environment

Environmental justice has become a very central concern for our wider UU world and for Allegheny. Recently, we have initiated what in the UU community is called the Green Sanctuary movement. As a congregation, we will be working on becoming more environmentally sensitive and responsible. John and Robert will help us with this commitment.

Sunday June 16 11:00 am - Program Committee
Pride Celebration

Today, Father’s Day, is Lesbian and Gay Pride Sunday in Pittsburgh, the day on which we celebrate pride in the bi-sexual, gay, lesbian and transgender community. AUUC has tried hard to become a welcoming congregation for folks from the bglt community and takes this opportunity this day every year to express solidarity and human rights for folks who identify in this community.

Sunday June 23 11:00 am - Linda Deafenbaugh
Summer Solstice Intergenerational Service

We’ll celebrate the solstice with the entire AUUC community today in this participatory ritual. We will also acknowledge and honor our Religious Education teachers who have dedicated their time and talents to our children every Sunday morning as the rest of us gather for worship. It is a day for us to honor the natural environment that supports our very lives.

Friday June 28 6:00 pm Potluck; 7:00 pm
AUUC & PIIN Issues’ Event

All in the congregation are invited to pick issues for congregational involvement locally and with the wider Pittsburgh Interfaith Impact Network. You’ll be out by 8:30!

Sunday June 30 10:00 am - Rev. Art McDonald
Dedication Sunday and Annual Picnic

Note that we will begin our summer schedule for Sunday mornings at 10:00 am today. We will be focusing our service on a child dedication for Maighread Southard-Wray, the daughter of Alexis and Lawrence. After the service, we’ll head off to the North Hills for our annual church picnic.

Regular Sunday Service at Allegheny Unitarian Universalist Church begins at 11 o'clock. Summer services (starting June 30) begin at 10:00 o'clock.
