Since 1906, Allegheny Unitarian Universalist Church has been a beacon not just of community, truth, and spiritual growth, but of social advocacy and action.

So what do we do at Allegheny that's so special? We provide a welcoming home for people from many religious backgrounds and perspectives. We provide a non-judgmental reception to people of diverse sexual orientations. As an urban church, we work in partnership with the North Side community of which we are a part, and with those whose circumstances require a helping hand.

As a congregation and as individuals, we have historically involved ourselves in issues of the times - issues like women's suffrage, civil rights, urban renewal, anti-war protests, and nuclear disarmament. Today we're working on a broad range of social issues including economic justice, racial diversity, gay rights, community revitalization, homelessness and hunger, and environmental issues.

As the 2nd oldest Unitarian Church in Pittsburgh, we've been around awhile, but you won't find us stuck in the past. We are growing in numbers and voice, experiencing a rebirth of commitment and a new relevance to our work. We invite you to come learn more about our community.

Services for April 2002

Sunday, April 7, 11:00 am - Edith Bell
Yom Hashoah Commemoration

We are delighted to invite into our pulpit, Edith Bell, who grew up as a Jewish child in Nazi Germany. She will tell about her family’s life under the Third Reich, share her experiences in concentration camps, and what can happen when groups of people are scapegoated and dehumanized. She will also reflect on how her past helped influence her life and work since, and take questions from the congregation.

Sunday April 14 11:00AM - Ann Sitron & Peter Adams
Unitarian Universalism Through the Generations

AUUC does not have many members who are life-long Unitarians or Universalists. Even less do we have stories of members who have inherited UU or passed it on to their children. This morning we have the special treat of hearing from Peter Adams, who’s dad Eugene, is a retired UU minister and contemporary of our own Minister Emeritus, Jesse Cavileer, and Ann Sitron, who came to UU from a Jewish background. Ann and Pete have children who have embraced UU as well. They’ll share this UU story with us.

Sunday April 21 11:00 - Rev. Art McDonald
Revisiting the Just War Tradition: Is it Relevant?

During the discussions that took place soon after the attacks of September 11as to appropriate responses on the part of the U.S. government, it was often said that those of us who opposed a strong military response were in the pacifist camp. Though many anti-war activists are indeed part of some tradition of pacifism, this morning Art will talk about his own questions about the current war strategy from a just war position; he’ll compare and contrast just war with pacifism. He’ll also reflect on the war’s next stage.

Sunday April 28 11:00 - Leo Nagorski
Is There Truth?

Long term AUUC member, Leo Nagorski, always offers thoughtful reflections on issues of concern to the religious community. Today Leo will tackle one of the problems raised by what some refer to as the current post-modern age, i.e., are there any universal truths or any truths at all that wee can share? If yes, what might they be?

Regular Sunday Service at Allegheny Unitarian Universalist Church begins at 11 o'clock.
