"Won't You Be My Neighbor!"

Two neighborhood families lost their homes to fire the week before Christmas. The neighborhood responded with a generous spirit by holding a neighborhood concert on January 15 to benefit these families. The church offered our space for the event for free, helping make this a zero-cost fund-raiser. We made it possible to share over $1500 between these two families. Our mission reaches beyond our walls even while we're enjoying music & spoken word inside them! (Check out this coverage of the event on "Sampsonia.")

The winter quarter Share-the-Plate Justice Partner is Phoenix Witness Project, in support of members of the OM District (of which we are a part) to attend this summer's "Justice General Assembly," the UU Association's annual business meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, where we'll focus on justice, not "business as usual."

Congratulations, Allegheny! We received a "Creating Justice" award from the UU Service Committee again this year for outstanding percentage of members of the UUSC, as you may have seen mentioned in your "UU World" magazine.

(One of the ways we welcome members to the UUSC is through the "Guest at Your Table" program. Get the box!)

Meet One of Our Guests

Dalia is a youth leader and human-rights activist in Egypt. She is shattering barriers to empower a generation of Egyptians who are experiencing democracy for the first time. And her work is supported by your donations to our "Guest at Your Table" program.

Inspired by Martin Luther King Jr., Dalia worked with UUSC to translate a comic book about the Montgomery bus boycott into Arabic and train youth activists in nonviolent protest. Following the 2011 nonviolent revolution, she is working to educate voters throughout Egypt, many of whom have never voted in an election, and encourage them to take part in their budding democracy.

Dalia believes that everyone should have a voice and a choice in democratic society.

Learn more about the training and education in nonviolence and civic engagement for youth activists in Stories of Hope. Go deeper and read more about UUSC's Civil Liberties Program, including partners around the world and in the United States.

Support the North Side Common Ministry's Food Pantry. We always have a donations basket in Founders Hall, and our children's Religious Education program sponsors bi-annual food drives. Link here for the Fall 2011 Food Drive.

Things not everybody thinks about: We're always collecting underwear and toiletries for the homeless men at the North Side Common Ministries shelter. There's a basket at the Community Table in Founders Hall.

Are your batteries dead? Not figuratively. Literally. They don't go in recycle and shouldn't be thrown in the trash. Green Sanctuary has a bin in Founders Hall for you to bring your old batteries and electronics.

“Live justly, beginning with ourselves and one another.”

Many thanks to all for the successful "Conflict Reframing" workshop as part of our "Covenant of Right Relations" process. A very special thanks to Rev. Mary Grigolia for her wisdom and creativity in creating a conflict workshop that works! Click here for more.

Allegheny Unitarian Universalist Church's mission is to be a welcoming urban congregation that puts Unitarian Universalism into action by celebrating life, nourishing the spirit, and inspiring a commitment to justice. Together we are building a community of justice, equity, and compassionate service to others, the neighborhood, and the planet. Sunday worship starts at 10:30AM.  We are located across from the National Aviary at 416 West North Avenue in Pittsburgh’s North Side (15212) and are served by bus lines 15, 16, and 17, with 54 nearby. For further information, call 412-322-4261.

Our Vision: "We will strive toward focusing on what we have in common, while appreciating the different ways to fulfill our mission. We will honor our history and principles while daring to affect responsible change. We will become more inclusive and accessible. We will care for each other and the earth. We will embrace the synergy between nourishing the spirit and performing our justice work as an urban congregation." We hope you'll join us in realizing our vision together!
